Getting to the Root of Black Streaks

When you think of a roof-you think of protection.  It protects your home and the people you love most.  It shields you from all types of weather, keeps your house warm in the winter, and cool in the summer.

Roof maintenance is important to the overall structure of your home.  If something’s wrong with the roof, it could lead to lots of other issues inside and outside of your home.  Part of roof maintenance is keeping it free from the damaging effects of dirt, mold, mildew, moss, and algae.  How do you know if these are issues for you?

Go outside and take a look at your roof.  See those black and green streaks…

THAT’S THE PROBLEM.

Let’s break it down.

Black Streaks:

It’s algae – Gloeocapsa magma to be exact. As the algae accumulates, it leaves behind a dark, hardened outer coating, aka streaks and stains. The algae actually feed on the limestone in shingles and destroy the granules.  It’s caused by dirt, mold, and mildew accumulation.

Mold:

Mold could also be an issue, usually caused by humid, damp weather. Left unchecked it can end up in costly repairs or roof replacement. Mold on the outside usually indicates mold on the inside…YIKES.

Moss:

Moss can accumulate and actually takes root on your roof. Moss cannot be removed because it would cause damage to the shingles.
